Election thoughts – What I’m Doing This Year

Liberals or Conservatives

Is your refrigerator running?

If so, I hope it gets a lot of votes. πŸ˜‰

The federal election is next week. I didn’t watch the recent debate. But I heard it was a train wreck.
If the polls are any indication it will be a pretty close race between incumbent Trudeau and O’Toole.

Who I’m voting for

Short answer, no one. πŸ™‚

From a purely economic point of view voting just isn’t a good use of my time.

But if I had to vote I would choose the party that will cause the least amount of interference with me on my road to financial success. And right now that vote would go to team Purple.

The People’s Party has a mandate to drop capital gains from the current 50% inclusion rate, down to 0%.

If that happens, asset prices would rise as lower taxation increases demand.
And the Loonie would become stronger allowing Canadians to invest globally for cheaper. πŸ™‚

Alas, historically speaking Purple has never gotten more than 2% of the votes in my area. So I would be wasting my time going to the polls. My electoral district has always voted strongly for team Orange. So unlike before, I’m going to sit this election out.

I’m responsible for my own life, not someone else

I shouldn’t depend on others, or feel like they owe me something.
Why give that power to someone else when I could hold onto it myself?

So I don’t really care who wins the election.
The individual decisions I make on a daily basis are way more important.

The party leaders don’t even know me. They don’t care about my personal, daily problems. They are just strangers. I’m not trying to throw shade at anyone. It’s just a simple fact. The more I depend on giving power to someone else, the less efficacy I have over my own domain.

If the Liberals wins again, that’s cool. My net worth has grown by over $1 million since Justin Trudeau became Prime Minister in 2015. So more of the same isn’t bad. And if the Conservatives win then I’ll adapt to their new policies.

Priorities

Talking about politics can be fun. But at the end of the day, nobody is going to help me get to where I want to go.
Nobody will give me permission to tackle large goals and test my limitations.

If I want to choose my own path through life I have to take responsibility for myself. πŸ™‚

What can I do today that will give me more time tomorrow, regardless of the election outcome?

Here are some ideas…

  • Believe I can create my own destiny.
  • Commit to building a 7 figure liquid portfolio, not just want to have one.
  • Focus on opportunities rather than obstacles.
  • Associate with positive, successful people.
  • Believe I am bigger than my problems.
  • Value my time and choose to get paid based on results.
  • Spend time to learn how to better manage my money.

Your choice not to vote. Can’t say I blame you as this was a useless election call. Having said that though I trust you will NOT expound on the whatever government chooses to do during their mandate because quite simply you have chosen not to voice your opinion through a democratic vote.
We need governments that will administer the public funds in the public interest rather than courting favour with whoever has a sexy idea.
As my good friend Thoreau said “The government that governs the best is the government that governs the least” But that is an idealist world where one assumes that everyone conducts their lives for the common good without any government intervention (CPP, OAS, EI, Medicare, etc, etc, etc) Any one want to step up to the plate and say they are going to cancel these programs and let citizens take care of their own regions?
Anyone running a cheque book account of how mech each parties promises will cost us?

I think this time around no one really wanna take on the poop pile and so Trudeau is kind of throwing a fit by saying “well if you guys think I’m doing a terrible job then let’s have an election then”… I have always been Team Conservative but they also have some questionable policies in the works if they do win office. However, I do agree with Liquid but personally I still voted since it’s a right and we need to exercise that to the max so this country can stay afloat and become better… hopefully lol. I do think we need a hard *ss to whip us into shape though; I just feel like we are such sensitive children that thinks we’re owed everything, whatever happened to that hard working mentality instead we think everything sucks lol.

In terms of finance, all I ask is whoever wins office really work on stimulating the economy on a local and global scale so we can thrive. I’m no politician and I know we have tried but we really need to stand our own and start building our own brand to the world and start to make some big moves.

Hah! I wonder, wouldn’t it be best to vote for the most corrupt party that looks the other way the most as housing prices become an affordable for the average Canadian citizen?

Here in the United States, I meant amazed at how much your home prices have gone up relative to income. I just hope people of the world view the United States as equally as Canada one day. It’s not like we don’t have humongous companies, great innovation, good diversity, and amazing weather!

Which candidate will help ignite the Canadian housing market further?

I am betting that is the candidate that will win!

YES FINALLY. Someone who understands that it’s OK NOT to vote. I remember in college people shamed me for not registering to vote. Aside from the fact that I wasn’t eligible to vote at the time (which I explained to them but they clearly thought they knew better and tried to correct me), I just didn’t want to vote.

There’s other things that’s going on in our lives that are more important to us than voting, we have to normalize not voting is perfectly OK as long as we don’t complain about the results afterwards.

Absolutely. If I can do it electronically, I would be more inclined to vote as well.

Dear Liquid,

Trust me, you don’t want to have Maxime Bernier as Prime Minister, he’s a super idiot. You need to see beyond your finance. If we get a bad Prime Minister – like Maxime Bernier – things will hit us hard and following what, you won’t be in a good financial situation.

You need to vote.

My money is on Trudeau eking out a win. I’m not too happy about it, but I try not to get bogged down in politics these days. Need to stay focused on what you can control: earning, saving, investing, and most importantly health and happiness!

I totally respect your right to NOT vote. However, I would urge you to also consider the other big, non-fiscal issues that are on the line: the climate crisis, social justice, racial equality.

In this respect, it can make a big difference to vote for who will fight for and defend the protections, rights and freedoms already established (and that we still need to push for).

For me, fiscal responsibility is of equal importance in this election as the other issues I’ve listed. As Sunny points out, we DO NOT want someone like Maxime Bernier in charge.

He and others in his party have made racist, xenophobic, homophobic, and transphobic comments and seem to support/believe in far right ideologies. That is NOT a Canada I want to live in.

Interesting that your district is so strongly NDP. My brother sent me this interesting tool this morning. Might be fun for you to take it and see where in the voter spectrum you land: https://votecompass.cbc.ca/canada

I think it’s also important to take into account who will be the best for your riding and not only the overall leader and party policies. PPC had some interesting policy ideas when they first came around, but I think they have shown their true colours in this campaign and have some extremely questionable candidates in various ridings.

We need a leader who is balanced, fair and takes ownership of important issues. It’s one thing to say you’re going to do this and do that, but the actions need to back that up. The campaign promises also need to be realistically achievable, not just pie-in-the-sky targets that appeal to the hopes and dreams of certain voter segments.

I like your financial posts/thoughts but I’m disappointed in your decision not to vote and the implication that the only issue you care about is your own personal wealth. How you could vote for a party that would withdraw from the Paris accord when we are in the midst of a climate emergency that will massively impact future generations so that you can pay a bit less capital gains tax is beyond me.

Tough question. I think it’s okay for you to share your political opinion but economic policies don’t exist in a vacuum so perhaps if you venture into this realm you should research further. You could sway some reader’s votes without realizing the full story yourself.
